A new relief initiative by Cook County promises to provide much-needed financial support to homeowners in Barrington and other areas who are grappling with significant property tax hikes.
Program Overview
The Cook County Homeowner Relief Fund aims at alleviating the burden for residents whose property taxes soared by at least 50% between 2021 and 2023. The program, funded by a $15 million allocation, offers eligible homeowners a payment of $1,000.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet specific criteria: their household income should be at or below 100% of Cook County's median, approximately $120,000 for a family of four and $96,000 for a family of two. Additionally, property owners must hold an active homeowner exemption and have resided in the property during the specified period.
Application and Selection Process
Applications are being accepted until October 10 via the website hrf.cookcountyil.gov. Successful candidates will enter a lottery to receive the monetary relief.
Statements from Officials
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle highlighted the importance of property tax reform, while Commissioner Bridget Gainer expressed hope that the program would prevent economic displacement.
Technological Delays
Complications with a countywide property tax office software upgrade by Tyler Technologies have delayed property tax bill issuance, raising concerns about the accuracy of the tax bills.
Response to Delays
To mitigate financial strain, Cook County reopened a $300 million loan fund to support smaller municipalities until tax revenues are disbursed. Applications for this loan are accepted until October 3.
Encouragement to Residents
Barrington residents affected by these tax hikes are encouraged to apply for the relief fund and benefit from the county’s support efforts during this financially challenging period.
