Unidentified human skeletal remains were found Feb. 14 in a wooded area of Baker’s Lake Nature Preserve in Barrington, and authorities are still working to identify the person and determine the cause and manner of death.
The Cook County Forest Preserves police are leading the investigation at the preserve, which is part of the Forest Preserves of Cook County system, while the Cook County medical examiner’s office is responsible for examining the remains and making official determinations that can include identification and the cause and manner of death.
Authorities have released few details beyond confirming the discovery and the ongoing investigation. Officials have emphasized that the case remains in an early stage and that additional information is not yet available.
Baker’s Lake Nature Preserve is a roughly 330-acre preserve with wooded areas and trails that many residents and visitors use for recreation and wildlife viewing. The discovery drew immediate local attention because of the preserve’s role as a well-known public space along East Dundee Road.
In cases involving skeletal remains, the medical examiner’s work can include forensic examination and other methods aimed at confirming identity, while forest preserve police handle the law-enforcement investigation and scene work. Both agencies typically coordinate as information develops.
The Barrington area has seen similar discoveries in the past, with investigators initially facing significant uncertainty. In a 2010 case involving remains found in a forested area near Barrington, Forest Preserve Police Chief John Tannahill underscored the limits of early information, saying, “We’re not 100 percent sure about anything.” as reported in prior coverage by the Daily Herald in Historic Human Remains Case - Daily Herald (2010).
Barrington, a suburban village of roughly 10,500 to 11,000 residents, is known for its residential neighborhoods and access to open space, with the forest preserves forming a prominent part of the area’s landscape, according to population estimates published by Illinois Hometown Locator.
For now, investigators have not released the person’s identity or any findings on how or when the death occurred. Authorities have said no additional details are available as the Cook County Forest Preserves police and the medical examiner continue their work.
